Five Ways to Save the Earth in Your Daily Life
- Read the newspaper. (Even better, get an online subscription, which eliminates paper waste). But get educated! Every day there are stories about the changing environment–whether it be an article on deforestation in the Amazon, a government proposal brought before Congress, or an expose on the dangers of genetically modified foods, the key element to a successful democracy is information. Reading an article may move you to action–fighting for a policy you believe would better your community, country, or world. The reason why protest fails sometimes is because the public is not well–informed about the actions of their government, not because they don’t care. So read up, and speak out!
- Recycle. Recycling goes beyond waste tossed haphazardly in colored bins. It’s about reducing waste altogether by reusing certain items and properly disposing of others. Use cloth bags that can be reused over and over again for grocery trips. Use email instead of printing or writing out on paper. Toss empty plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and paper into the proper recycling bins. If recycling became a daily part of everyone’s life, the burden would not be very great at all, and the benefits would reach everyone in the community.
- Turn off electric appliances and faucets when not in use. Not only does it save the environment, but it will save your water and electric bills as well. It’s simply wasteful and expensive to do otherwise.
- Walk or ride a bicycle. Being green doesn’t necessarily mean buying the most expensive hybrid that Ford comes out with. Why not walk to school, ride your bike to the corner store, or scooter to your friend’s house? It saves you a considerable amount of money in gas money and maintenance costs, and it’s good exercise, too!
- Support Green Business. They may cost a bit more than traditional businesses, but they’re eco–aware, free trade, healthier, and animal–friendly alternatives. Stop corporate bulldozing and boycott products and companies that are detrimental to the environment. Green business is truly the business of the future: a brighter, healthier, and ultimately happier future.
